EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Executive Summary
The UK market for closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems had a difficult year in 2001, but Key Note estimates that it grew by 2.7 percent in 2002, to a value of £375m at end-user prices. This figure includes the design, supply, installation and maintenance of equipment but excludes any monitoring costs. Sales appear to have been maintained at or above these levels in the first 2 months of 2003, but the economic forecast for the rest of the year is very uncertain, owing to the hostilities in the Middle East.
Security applications account for most of the market's value, but uses such as traffic control, transport safety and monitoring of industrial plant are also included. Security applications for CCTV include surveillance, point-of-sale monitoring, alarm verification, biometric identification for access control, and automated number-plate recognition.
The industry enjoyed a boom in the mid-1990s, when many large city-centre schemes were installed. This boom is now over, and the market is moving towards a more mature period, relying more on system upgrades and the building of new commercial premises and other new structures. However, there remain many opportunities to increase and improve the use of CCTV in particular customer sectors. Many of the systems installed in the first half of the 1990s are already in need of updating and extending.
The UK has a relatively advanced market for CCTV systems. The industry has a strong international reputation and its overseas sales are performing well. There is an increasing emphasis on the opportunities offered by export markets. However, CCTV equipment prices have continued to be eroded, owing to severe competition, the availability of equipment from countries with lower labour costs, and the advantages of economies of scale as the world market for CCTV continues to grow. The market's shift from analogue to digital equipment is helping to counter this trend. The opportunities are greatest at the leading edge of technology.
Key Note forecasts some overall growth in the market in 2003 and 2004. However, growing maturity and the simplification of installation are likely to result in a fall in the market's value after this date. The immediate opportunities for development are to be found in equipment that is designed to be used over IT networks, including the Internet.
