Key Note estimates that, in 2004, the UK market for motor vehicle security was worth £311m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp). Vehicle security products either bear the brands of their manufacturers, or are supplied to the vehicle manufacturers on an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basis, so that they bear the brand of the vehicle manufacturer.
The market includes locks, physical security products (such as mechanical immobilisers, clamps and motorcycle anchors, and security marking of vehicles) and electronic security products (which includes immobilisers, alarms and combined alarm/immobilisers, products to combat key theft and hijacking, and stolen-vehicle tracking services).
Much of the demand for vehicle security products comes from the new vehicle sector rather than from the aftermarket. The UK is the fourth-largest motor vehicle producer in Europe and is dependent on export markets for a large proportion of its sales. UK vehicle production levels fell in 2001, but have shown growth in the 3 years since then.
The steady reduction in vehicle thefts over the last 4 years can be attributed to the compulsory fitting of immobilisers to new cars, the continuous improvement in security products, increasing driver education, and better security in streets and car parks. However, there has been a sharp increase in the theft of car keys. As a result, electronic identity devices that combat this form of car theft have come onto the market.
