EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2001, the UK market for lighting products was estimated to be worth £1.44bn at manufacturers' selling prices (msp). This represented a growth rate of 4.4 percent since 2000 and continued the trend of moderate to good growth that the market has experienced since the mid-1990s.
For the purposes of this Key Note report, lighting products are defined as electric lighting products, which include lamps, luminaires and portable electric lighting systems, such as those used on building sites. Other lighting products, including non-electric lighting systems and those used for automotive and other transport vehicles, are excluded from the definition.
The lighting market is characterised by its two dominant sectors, lamps and luminaires. The luminaires market is more closely allied to the overall performance of the economy and, therefore, tends to perform less well in times of economic constraint. In contrast with lamps, the luminaires sector is dominated by new-build and refurbishment activity, and is characterised by 'wants' rather than 'needs' purchasing. The lamp market includes all types of lamps and tubes, and benefits from the frequent replacement cycle of these products in both the domestic and non-domestic sectors.
The lighting market has benefited from increased consumer spending since the late 1990s. The rise in interest in home makeovers has meant that lighting systems are increasingly regarded as an integral feature of interior decoration schemes. Value growth in the domestic market has also been stimulated by additional purchases, e.g. mood lighting and the emergence of higher value niche sectors, such as fibre optics, security and garden lighting systems. The non-domestic market has been affected by the imposition of the Climate Change Levy, which should stimulate future value growth within the market as lighting designers specify more energy efficient lighting systems. The Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and Facilities Management contracts are also beginning to have an impact, with lighting systems now included as part of the whole life costing element and planned replacement and refurbishment also included in the contract negotiations.
The supply side of the market has been dominated by the reduction in UK manufacturing capacity as more organisations move production abroad. The emergence of large multinational organisations, with numerous production facilities is also impacting on the future of production in the UK. Imports continue to exert an element of price pressure in the market, particularly those deriving from lower-cost economies, such as eastern Europe and the Far East.
