EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK facsimile (fax) machine and photocopier market is valued at £583m in 1996, having risen by 2.3 percent since 1995. Falling prices have been the key factor behind the market's faltering sales. In both the fax machine and photocopier market, manufacturers and dealers are focusing on supplies and services as opposed to hardware, in order to generate sales and profits. Hardware in many respects is becoming a loss-leader product

The photocopier market is valued at £419m, representing 71.9 percent of the market. The UK fax machine market is worth £164m in 1996, having grown by 7.9 percent over 1995. Fax machines are the main growth segment of the market.

This report covers the markets for photocopiers (desktop, low-volume, mid-volume and high-volume models) and fax machines (Group III and Group IV). Reference is also made to other segmentations in the market, e.g. new and reconditioned photocopiers, and plain paper and thermal fax machines.

The major growth areas for fax machines have been: multifunctional faxes with PC connectivity (both Group IV and Group III faxes); plain paper fax machines -- which will increasingly replace personal, consumer fax machines; modems (especially modems available as fax modems); Group IV fax machines; and colour fax machines.

The main growth segments of the photocopier market have been: digital photocopiers (albeit from a very small base), colour photocopiers, `green' photocopiers, and desktop/personal photocopiers.

Key Note estimates that between 1997 and the year 2000, the market for fax machines and photocopiers will fall by 1.2 percent in value terms. Any increase in the market will take place in the fax sector where sales will rise by 15.7 percent. Photocopier value sales in contrast will fall by 8.2 percent over the same period.

Sales of fax machines will be supported by a more rapid uptake within the residential and small office/home office (SoHo) market, which will support a growth in volumes in the market. In contrast, in the photocopier market, rising desktop sales will not be enough to offset declines in larger models as companies increasingly opt for multifunctioned devices (MFNs) and networked models, which will reduce their volume needs for photocopiers.
