EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Executive Summary Key Note estimates that the combined market for photocopiers and fax machines was worth £750m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 2001. This figure includes sales of multifunction products (MFPs), which the manufacturers tend to position as developments of fax machines or as copiers/printers.
The combined market grew by 2.7 percent in 2000 and Key Note estimates that there was a similar growth level (3.2 percent) in 2001. Photocopiers fall into subsectors according to their speed of operation, with an additional subsector accounted for by colour photocopiers. Fax machines can be categorised according to the printing technology used. Prices of both photocopiers and fax machines have been falling since 1998. This has enabled customers to upgrade to either higher speeds or machines with more functions or higher print quality, so the overall market value has tended to be maintained and even to show some growth.
The major trends affecting this market include a fairly swift transition from analogue technology to digital technology in the photocopiers sector, although this has proceeded more rapidly in some subsectors than in others. Colour photocopier sales are growing, although 2000 was a disappointing year for this subsector and more colour fax machines have been launched. Manufacturers are putting most of their efforts into digital copiers/printers and all-in-one (AIO) machines offering copying, scanning, printing, faxing and network operation.
Strong sales have been recorded for MFPs in 2001, with sales expected to boom in 2002. Key Note forecasts that the combined value of the photocopiers and fax machines market will remain fairly static to 2006. Prices will continue to fall in both sectors. Growth in MFPs will be offset by falling sales of stand-alone fax machines and desktop and low-volume photocopiers.
