EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the UK market for computer
hardware was worth £12.09bn at manufacturers' prices in 1998. Growth in
1998 was around 7.4 percent in terms of value.
The computer hardware market
includes servers, workstations, personal computers (PCs), data processing
peripherals (such as printers and scanners) and data communications hardware,
which is mainly local area network (LAN) hardware and modems. Servers are
multi-user systems, including large, enterprise servers or mainframes,
mid-range computers and low-end servers. PCs can be divided into desktop and
portable models, the latter being mainly of the notebook size.
The overall
market has received a boost in 1997 and 1998 from the rush to achieve
Millennium compatibility. Growth in corporate budgets is expected to be slower
in 1999 as this effect starts to come to an end.
Technical advances bring
about a rapid improvement of the price/performance ratio of computers, and the
real cost of computers (in terms of processing power and functionality) has
fallen steeply, especially in 1998. Volume growth has run far ahead of value
growth in this market.
In the mainframes/enterprise servers sector, the
gradual decline in value seen in recent years showed some reversal in 1997 and
1998. Among the reasons for this upturn in demand is the heavy demand placed on
Web servers by the Internet and intranet-based networking, the growth of
electronic commerce (e-commerce) and the ever-rising demand for storage to
handle large databases.
The home PC market grew strongly in volume in 1998,
thanks to falling prices brought about by cheaper components and intense
competition between the suppliers. Many people were tempted to take advantage
of these prices to upgrade old PCs or buy their first machine, so the
penetration of home computers increased. Pressure to use the Internet has also
helped to boost this sector.
Expected features of the hardware market in
the next 5 years include the growth of `thin client' architecture, a trend
which has been slower than originally forecast, and strong demand for powerful
servers to deal with the rising volume of e-commerce. There is still
considerable scope for further penetration of home computers.
Key Note
expects growth in the computer hardware market to slow to around 5 percent in 1999 and
then fall further in 2000 and 2001, but there are many positive influences on
the market which should avoid a slump in value.
