EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK market for computer hardware, including
computers, peripherals and maintenance by the manufacturers, had an estimated
value of £11bn at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 1996 and is
expected to rise to £11.82bn in 1997.
Computer hardware includes
host systems (large, medium and small), workstations, personal computers (PCs),
hand-held computers, printers, scanners, and other peripherals, such as storage
devices.
Conflicting trends affect the market. The ever rising demand
for computing power to handle large databases, complex software and advanced
graphics is satisfied to some extent by the rapid improvement in the
price/performance ratio of most types of computer.
The development of
the `thin client' concept is a natural progression of the trend towards
distributed computing. The first half of 1997 has seen the successful
implementation of network computers in some large organisations and the launch
of the rival NetPC.
The trend in large systems continues away from
proprietory systems, in favour of UNIX, or to downsizing to mid-range servers
or distributed systems, although users are now far more cautious about
abandoning their large systems. Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)
based large systems continue to make rapid advances in the price/performance
ratio, and the cost of mainframe storage is coming down correspondingly.
In the departmental server sector, machines based on Windows NT operating
systems have eroded sales of UNIX servers, and clustering technology has become
available on NT-based machines. The local area network (LAN) server sector
continues to grow strongly, but there is strong price competition.
Heavy competition and price cutting remains a feature of the PC sector,
which has, however, grown very strongly in 1995 and 1996. Demand for computer
hardware should continue to grow strongly in the next few years but will tend
to be balanced by falling prices. Key Note forecasts that an overall computer
hardware market growth of 7.5 percent at current prices will slow to 5 percent by the year
2000.
