Key Note estimates that the market for active fire protection equipment grew by 10 percent in 2000, to reach £877m at end-user prices.
Active fire protection includes fire detection and alarm systems, portable extinguishers, fixed extinguishing systems, fire hoses and some small product subsectors, such as fire blankets. The design, installation and maintenance of systems account for a substantial part of the market for detection and alarm systems and fixed fire extinguishing systems. In the case of portable fire extinguishers, after-sales servicing accounts for around half the market.
Strong growth in output of commercial and industrial buildings has boosted the demand for fire protection between 1995 and 1999. This growth slowed in 2000 and some decline is expected for 2001 and 2002. There have been various important building and transportation projects in the latter half of the 1990s, which have boosted demand for fire protection. These include the extension of the Jubilee Line by London Underground and the construction of the Millennium Dome and other Millennium projects.
Increasingly strict regulations governing the fire protection of buildings and the protection of employees provide longer-term growth in the market. While some traditional customer sectors in heavy industry have been declining in importance over the years, increased demand is coming from computer and telecommunication-based industries, which have specialised fire protection demands.
Although growth from 2001 to 2005 may be slower than in recent years, Key Note expects that it will continue to exceed inflation. Growth is expected in addressable alarm systems and integrated building management systems, as well as in demand for clean extinguishing products and systems, which can be used in the presence of computer and telecommunications equipment.
