EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK automatic vending market is buoyant — virtually all market sectors and supplier sectors are experiencing healthy growth. In 2000, sales of products through vending machines increased by 8 percent at current prices, to produce a market valued at £3.1bn.

The vending machine market increased by an estimated 5.3 percent in 2000 — there are now over a billion machines in operation in the UK. UK manufacturers’ sales of vending machines grew by 8.2 percent, in value terms in 2000, to reach an estimated £158m.

The largest element of the UK vending machine base is refreshment machines. This includes machines for hot beverages, cold drinks, snack foods, meals and confectionery. The refreshment machine base increased by 5.3 percent in 2000, driven by strong growth in the penetration of canned drinks machines and snack/food machines. The canned drinks machine base increased by 11 percent in 2000, with snack/food machines increasing by 10.3 percent. The largest group of vending machines still serve hot beverages, predominantly coffee, and are sited in workplaces. The largest group of non-food machines are cigarette machines (although their numbers have been declining in the last 2 years) — they accounted for over 14 percent of the total vending machine market in 2000. The remaining 43 percent of machines sell a variety of merchandise, led by condoms and personal hygiene products.

Eating trends have changed in the last decade, with large meals replaced by regular snacking among many consumers. This trend, along with the convenience factor and demands for 24-hour access to goods, has helped vending sales. There is also a wider choice of vended goods available, while the spread of vending machines to more locations — such as petrol stations, transport terminals, leisure and sports venues, schools, colleges, hospitals and workplaces — has encouraged more use.

The main suppliers to the UK vending industry are machine manufacturers and machine operators. The vending machine manufacturing base consists of a relatively small number of manufacturers, and is led by companies such as Stentorfield Ltd, Westomatic Vending Services Ltd, and Wittenborg Group (UK) Ltd. Overseas suppliers, notably from the US and Europe, are increasing their share of the UK machine market. There is also a growing import trade in machine parts. The vending operators sector is much larger, and more fragmented, with many small operators serving local and regional markets. Major refreshment vending operators include Vendepac Ltd, Provend Services Ltd, 24 Seven Vending Ltd, and Autobar Group Ltd. Mayfair Vending Ltd and Sinclair Collis Ltd are market leaders in the cigarette vending sector.

The UK vending market will continue to expand. It will be driven by demands for convenience, and a wider choice of vended goods and locations. Key Note is forecasting an increase in vended product sales of 6.1 percent in 2001, and growth of 29.7 percent (at current prices) between 2000 and 2005.
