EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The market for mechanical handling equipment is an
important sector of the UK's mechanical engineering industry. In recent years,
the sector has become involved more closely in the integration and automation
of a variety of material handling activities in the manufacturing, distribution
and transportation areas of the economy.
The market consists of six product
sectors:
* conveyors
* cranes and transporters
*
lifts, escalators and moving walkways
* lifting, jacking and winding
devices
* forklift and self-propelled industrial trucks
* other
mechanical handling products.
In 1998, the total UK market is estimated to have
had a value of £2.29bn, including products and after-sales service items.
The overall rise in the value of the market between 1994 and 1998 was 15.3 percent,
but 1998 saw a fall of 2.6 percent on the previous year as increased price competition
and recessionary forces influenced the UK economy.
The UK market for
mechanical handling equipment is dominated by companies which are subsidiaries
of overseas businesses, mainly from elsewhere in Europe or the US. The process
of consolidation is continuing, and a number of mergers and acquisitions have
taken place recently.
Over the next few years, the market is unlikely to
see any significant upturn in value, due to increased price competitiveness,
occasioned by an over-supply situation and the tight investment budgets
experienced by many end users. Opportunities for added value will, however,
present themselves to suppliers which are prepared to offer additional services
alongside their equipment sales.
Taking these factors into account, Key
Note forecasts that the apparent UK market for mechanical handling equipment
will reach a value of £2.28bn by 2003.
