EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates the value of the UK market for
industrial valves at £776.7m in 1998, after taking into account exports
and imports. This was a rise of 3 percent on the previous year and an increase of 7.6 percent
since 1994. During the period 1994 to 1998, the market peaked at £790.6m
in 1996.
Industrial valves serve the need to shut off or control the flow
of liquids and gases in industrial and similar processes and systems. The main
markets arise in the oil, chemical, utility and building services sectors of
the economy, and the market is thus dependent on investment trends in these
sectors. Although there are around 150 to 200 suppliers of industrial valves
selling their products in the UK, not all the products are manufactured in the
UK.
Domestic demand for industrial valves has been frustrated recently by
the lack of significant investment in plant expansion in the end-user
industries. At the same time, imports have been encouraged and exports
discouraged by the high value of sterling against many currencies.
This
situation is expected to change slowly, beginning towards the end of the year
2000, and will thus encourage UK manufacturers' sales to rise. The value of the
UK market should recover to near its 1998 value by 2003, after falling in 1999
and 2000. A more rapid fall in sterling exchange rates and any strong recovery
in industrial investment in mainland Europe, or in the Far East, could
significantly raise the level of UK exports, since UK manufacturers have a good
reputation as suppliers of world-class products.
