| Key Note Research | 132 |
| The Key Note Range of Reports | 133 |
Key Note estimates that the apparent UK market for
industrial fasteners was worth £835m in 2000. The market has been falling
in value in recent years down from a figure of £1.09bn in 1996.
These figures cover the entire range of industrial fasteners, from the general
fasteners sold in builders merchants, through the hexagonal socket screws
used in the mechanical engineering sector, to the highly specialised fasteners
found in the aerospace industry. The market was hit particularly hard in 1999,
with a 12.6 percent fall in value, which particularly affected the general fastener
sector. Although the strength of sterling helped purchasers of general
fasteners, the trend towards overseas sourcing of lower-specification fasteners
was already well established.
Key Note has separated the range of
industrial fasteners into two distinct categories: general fasteners and
special-purpose fasteners. General fasteners include the majority of nuts,
bolts, screws, non-aviation rivets and building hardware. These products are
typically found in builders merchants, mail order catalogues,
agricultural merchants and DIY (do-it-yourself) stores.
Special-purpose fasteners have a much higher specification and tighter quality
control. These fasteners are used in aerospace, structural steelwork,
high-temperature applications and safety-critical situations. In general, they
are available only from the manufacturer or from specialist outlets.
The UK
market for industrial fasteners follows the fortunes of four main end-user
sectors: automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, and computers and
telecommunications. The aerospace sector is now in recovery, which has boosted
sales of specialist fasteners, but the general fastener markets (with the
exception of the computer and telecommunications sector) are static. The vast
majority of general fasteners, however, are sourced from overseas countries
especially Taiwan.
Those UK companies that have concentrated on the
distribution of industrial fasteners have experienced good growth. Key Note
believes that the larger purchasers of fasteners have developed strong
purchasing links with these distributors, so that stock levels are strictly
controlled, with reordering taking place automatically. The larger consumers
are seeking single sourcing of their components and have even subcontracted
small assembly and kitting-out functions to the distributors.
The
markets value is expected to remain static in 2001 and then to recover
slowly over the following 4 years as aerospace orders improve. Key Note
forecasts that special-purpose fasteners will take the greater share of the
markets value by 2003.
