EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK glassware market can be categorised into
three main sectors by type of glassware:
* soda lime glassware
* crystal glassware
* heat-resistant glassware.
The two main methods of production are machine
gathering and hand gathering, the former being important in the soda lime and
heat-resistant glassware sectors, while the latter is regarded by many as the
only way to produce the highest quality crystal glassware. Soda lime glassware
accounts for the bulk of glassware sales, taking a 48 percent share by value in 1998.
Crystal glassware took a 35 percent share of the market, with heat-resistant glassware
taking the remaining 17 percent.
Having survived the recession of the early 1990s,
the glassware market has recovered. However, growth -- while steady -- has been
slow in recent years, rising by 8 percent between 1993 and 1998 to £327m.
In
terms of supply, the UK glassware industry is polarised between the larger
companies, mainly found in the machine-gathered sector, e.g. Demaglass Ltd and
The Ravenhead Company Ltd, and the independent specialist suppliers of crystal
glassware, many of which are well established household names with an
international reputation for quality, e.g. The Edinburgh Crystal Glass Company
Ltd, Dartington Crystal Group Ltd, Royal Brierley Crystal Ltd and Waterford
Crystal.
The UK glassware market has become increasingly influenced by
fashion and design in recent years, with manufacturers introducing brightly
coloured and decorated glassware as part of the growing trend towards more
casual home dining. This has boosted demand for soda lime glassware
products.
Overall, the hand-gathered sector has suffered as a result of the
improved quality of machine-made crystal and soda lime products, which has made
these products more attractive to consumers. With the increasing threat of
cheap imports from European countries, and more recently the Far East, the
leading glassware manufacturers have adopted new strategies and begun to
include imported crystal in their branded ranges.
The future looks
challenging for UK glassware manufacturers, as they move towards the new
Millennium with renewed optimism and greater confidence. Key Note forecasts
that between 1999 and 2003, the UK glassware market will grow by 7.8 percent at
current prices to reach £360m.
