EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

This Key Note Market Review studies the publishing industry, and primarily how it operates within the UK. Key Note estimates that the value of the market was £18.05bn in 2001, and that it will rise to £18.8bn by the end of 2002.

In each of the three sectors of the market — newspaper publishing, magazine publishing and book publishing — around 12 companies dominate the market. Very few companies are involved in more than one sector of the UK market, and only one company, Pearson PLC, operates in all three. This represents a massive change from the market of 10 years ago, when publishing conglomerates battled to be in every sector. Now the trend is to concentrate on just one sector, or possibly two if the company is large enough. Even in the case of Pearson PLC, there is a strong core unifying the company — business and educational information.

The UK publishing industry is still mainly UK-owned. However, in the magazine sector, there is a large tranche of companies that are foreign-owned. The following companies are owned by overseas companies: IPC Media Ltd, Attic Futura (UK) Ltd, The Condé Nast Publications Ltd, The National Magazine Company Ltd, The Reader's Digest Association Ltd and VNU Buisness Publications Ltd. In the newspaper sector, the regional newspaper groups of Newsquest Media Group Ltd and Independent Newspapers (Regionals) Ltd are owned by US and Irish companies respectively. The Telegraph and its sister Sunday paper, and The Independent and its Sunday equivalent, are owned by a Canadian and an Irish company respectively.

In the book publishing sphere, Harper Collins Publishers Ltd, Macmillan Publishers Ltd, Nelson Thornes Ltd, The Orion Publishing Group Ltd, Octopus Publishing Group Ltd and The Random House Group Ltd are all foreign-owned. Reed Elsevier Group PLC is a joint UK/Netherlands company.

NEWSPAPER PUBLISHING

According to The Newspaper Society, there are 1,269 newspaper titles in the UK regional press. In the national subsector, according to British Rate & Data (BRAD), there are 13 newspaper titles. Sales of regional newspapers and national mass-market newspapers are declining. Only the national quality papers are managing to retain their sales in terms of total sales. Within the small group of quality papers, there are a few that have declining sales.

The major regional newspaper groups continue to increase the number of titles that they publish. One major company, Johnston Press PLC, made a significant acquisition in March 2002 (of Regional Independent Newspapers [RIM]). Trinity Mirror PLC is the unchallenged leader in the regional newspaper market in terms of total circulation.

MAGAZINE PUBLISHING

At the end of 2001, there were 8,462 magazine titles being published in the UK, which includes consumer, business and academic titles. The number of consumer titles grew between 1997 and 2001.

One of the greatest changes in the sector is the continuing rise of customer magazines, i.e. titles that are published by banks, supermarkets, High Street shops, clubs and societies, and motoring organisations. These titles have made significant inroads into the market. The latest subsector to have been affected by this development is health and beauty, with both The Boots Company PLC and Superdrug Stores PLC having launched their own magazines.

BOOK PUBLISHING

Retail book sales stood at £3.65bn in 2001, according to Key Note estimates. This represented a rise of 5 percent on the figure of the previous year. The total number of books published rose in 2001, according to estimates by Key Note, as it has done consistently in most years. Most of the sector's value is attributable to consumer books but, in volume terms, consumer books have an even greater lead. Book Marketing Ltd says that 50 percent of consumer books are sold at discounted prices.

There are 11 major players in the UK book publishing sector, some of which are owned in turn by larger groups. Some foreign companies are present in the UK market through ownership of UK companies, while some of the UK players own companies or have subsidiaries overseas.

CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR

Key Note commissioned NOP to survey attitudes towards buying and reading books, magazines and newspapers. Some of its conclusions were unexpected, including:

THE FUTURE

Key Note estimates that the UK publishing industry will grow between 2002 and 2006. Revenues in all three market sectors, newspapers, magazines and books, are likely to rise.

The key issue for the long-term future of newspapers and magazines is advertising. Just over half of all advertising in the UK is press advertising, and the publishing industry hopes that this will continue. However, other forms of advertising pose a threat, primarily direct mail and Internet advertising. In the UK, Internet advertising is still small, according to the Advertisers Association. However, publishers are worried that it could increase and therefore syphon off some of the advertising that now goes to magazines and newspapers.

In book publishing, and magazine publishing to an extent, there are some concerns about the role of the BBC (which is planning to provide content for the new Curriculum Online for schools that is being launched by the Department for Education and Skills in September 2002). This is one of the subjects being looked at by PIRA International Ltd. (PIRA is currently researching the publishing industry and surveying publishers for a report to be presented to the Department of Trade and Industry during 2002.)
