This report looks at the printing industry, which
went through a year of massive change in 1999. The industry's products include
labels, packaging, newspapers, magazines, stationery, brochures and advertising
material.
The British Printing Industry Federation (BPIF) estimates that
the output of the printing and graphics industry was worth £13bn in 1999.
Key Note estimates that, in 1999, advertising literature represented around
£3.3bn, books and brochures £1.5bn, packaging £1.15bn and
newspapers and journals -- which appear less than four times a week --
£1.26bn.
Packaging and label manufacturers continue to find the UK
and European markets very difficult to compete in. Financial printers and book
printers have also experienced difficulties. The fact that margins are under
pressure in every sector is confirmed by PrintWeek magazine's survey of
the UK's top 500 companies, which shows that average operating profit margins
in 1998 fell from 6.6 percent to 6.1 percent.
There is now a considerable amount of
takeover activity in the industry. During 1999, the following companies were
bought by foreign companies:
* Cox & Wyman Ltd
* Field Group PLC
*
Kall Kwik Ltd
* Liberfabrica PLC
* Sidlaw PLC
* Wace
PLC.
Although the future of print is assured in an
increasingly electronic age, certain sections, such as financial printing,
stationery and catalogues, are being affected by developments in electronic
media.
Key Note forecasts that the value of UK sales in the printing
market will increase by 8.5 percent in the period from the year 2000 to
2004.
