EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK stationery market was worth £2.4bn at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 2000. Key Note estimates that there was a slight fall in 2001 to £2.37bn. This market includes products for office, home and educational use but excludes greetings cards, calendars and gift wrap.

76.6 percent of the market is made up of products made principally from paper and board — for example, envelopes, cut paper, continuous business forms, files and folders. The remaining 23.4 percent of the market is made up of writing instruments, desktop items and other miscellaneous stationery items.

The trends affecting most sectors in 2000 and 2001 have been falling prices and competition from cheap imports. However, not all sectors have been equally affected. Demand remains strong for fashionable writing instruments, personal stationery and for bespoke stationery for the direct mail sector.

The stationery market is affected by the health of the general economy.
In 2001, the difficulties for the industrial sector of the economy meant that some customers had reduced stationery needs or had closed completely, with the level of bad debts increasing. In the two-tier economy, consumer spending remained high, helping make the personal stationery market relatively prosperous.

Industry observers now accept that increasing use of computers is boosting the demand for office papers rather than the reverse, as was once expected. The eventual threat of the paperless office has been pushed further into the future, with experts predicting further growth in cut paper (at least in volume terms).

The volume of direct mail continues to grow, although this market is more mature in the UK than elsewhere in Europe. This trend is particularly helpful to the bespoke envelopes and business forms sectors, and to label sales.

The future direction of the market will depend on the economy, on any decision to enter the euro, on consumer spending levels and on direct-mail levels. Key Note expects a further downturn in the market value of stationery in 2002, followed by stabilisation at a reduced level.
