EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The value of the UK stationery market grew gradually to 1998, but is estimated to have remained virtually static in 1999, at around £3.09bn at manufacturers’ prices. Falling prices for paper and board stationery, due partly to falling raw materials price and partly to severe competition, have held back the value of the market, while demand in volume terms has been continuing to grow.

The market covered by this report includes only the core stationery items made of paper and board, writing instruments, desktop filing and storage, staples, etc. It includes products for office, home and school use. The background influences on the market are mostly favourable. These include strong employment levels and a relatively healthy economy boosting demand from the corporate sector, rising numbers of school pupils and students in higher education, and the growing use of home computers with printers.

Use of direct mail advertising continues to grow and advertisers are becoming ever more inventive in their attempts to attract the recipients’ attention, leading to strong demand for bespoke products. On the negative side, pressure from foreign competitors remains severe because of the continuing strength of sterling. The use of e-mail and electronic trading is reducing demand for some types of business forms and for stock envelopes. However, the increased use of computers is generating a large demand for printer paper.

The merger and acquisition activity which has been seen in the distribution sector over the last 10 years has continued, although there has been at least one new entrant to the market in the form of the mail order service Quill. An important feature of the market in 1999 has been the launch of several Internet shopping services for office products.

Paper prices are expected to start to rise in the year 2000 and this will increase stationery prices and the value of the stationery market. In constant price terms, Key Note expects very gradual growth in the next 2 to 3 years, possibly followed by a slight downturn due to the effect of electronic trading.
