| KEY NOTE ACCESS CONTROL JUNE 1998 |
| Overview |

ISBN 1-85765-823-X
Key Note estimates that the access control market
was worth £148m in 1996 and £169m in 1997, both at end-user prices.
The market covers stand-alone systems, online systems and systems which are
integrated with other security measures, together with control equipment and
software. It includes: audio and video door-entry systems; card access systems;
proximity systems; systems for automatic control of vehicle access; and
biometric access control systems.
Although the level of crime appears to
have been falling in recent years, it is still high. Moreover, official figures
do not show the whole picture. Access control systems not only help to prevent
crimes by unauthorised entry to buildings and sites; they are also used to
restrict the access of staff and visitors to certain areas within a building,
thus protecting data security, for example.
Within the access control market, there is a
gradual trend towards more use of integrated systems. Biometric techniques are
now well established in the US and have started to be adopted in the UK over
the last 2 to 3 years.
Prospects for the access control market over the next 5 years remain excellent. In the short term, the expected rush to achieve Millennium compliance will help to boost the market in 1998 and 1999. Forecasts for new building work within the commercial and industrial sector, to the year 2000, also suggest a boom in the security systems market. In the longer term, installers in the industry appear to expect a gradual growth in demand for biometric systems, which have now been installed in many major UK commercial and government locations. Key Note expects the access control market to grow by a total of 40.3 percent, in constant price terms, between 1998 and 2002 -- although some of this growth will be due to integrated systems, managing other security functions besides access control.
