EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the UK access control market was worth £227m at end-user prices, in 2002, an increase of 4.1 percent on 2001. This represented an improvement on the low level of growth achieved in 2001, when some manufacturers reported declining sales.
The market includes system design, equipment supply, installation and maintenance, and the ongoing sale of new cards and tokens, where appropriate. The products included in the market are audio and video entry systems, biometric systems, card-access systems, keypad entry systems, long-range and hands-free systems, and proximity systems. Systems sometimes include more than one technology for added security.
Factors holding back the market in 2001 were the slowing of the economy, the depressed state of the UK manufacturing industry and a Year-2000 effect, i.e. companies cut back their budgets after overspending to ensure Millennium compliance of security and building control systems. Manufacturers' comments suggest that that there was some improvement in 2002. The heightened emphasis on security brought about by the wave of terrorism that began on 11th September 2001 is encouraging security-spending approval, but the effect is not immediately apparent in terms of industry turnover, as it takes some time for systems to be planned, selected and built.
Construction output is an important driver of demand for access control and this has been mainly favourable in recent years. Between 1998 and 2002, there was strong growth in output of new buildings in the private commercial sector, and in public-sector housing and non-housing projects, but there was a decline in output of industrial buildings.
Proximity technology continued to lead the market in 2002; growth of demand for smart-card systems remained slow and biometric systems still only accounted for a small number of contracts.
Despite the subdued overall demand and the cost-consciousness of customers, the industry has reported some growth for higher-level systems. Demand has been increasing for networked access control systems that can be managed remotely, as well as for integrated security solutions and for systems integrating access control with other functions, such as heating and lighting, and staff-attendance records.
Key Note expects the market to show annual growth in value and volume to 2007. The adoption of biometrics seems certain to increase as prices come down. Use of contactless smart cards is also expected to grow, although the industry is not convinced that these will overtake proximity technology. Other trends include an increasing convergence between physical access control systems and IT access control.
