EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the value of the UK access-control market in 2001 was £220m, at current end-user prices. Comments from the industry suggest that growth slowed in 2001, but that there was good progress in some sectors, and indications of an improvement at the end of the year. Key Note estimates that the overall market grew in value by 3.8 percent in 2001, although some suppliers experienced flat sales in the UK.
The products included in this report are audio- and video-entry systems, biometric systems, card access systems, keypad systems, proximity systems and long-range and hands-free systems. Products may also include more than one technology for added security.
The depressed state of the UK manufacturing industry was largely responsible for a decline in spending in 2001, but the output of new office buildings grew in the commercial sector.
The UK access-control market includes: system design and equipment supply; installation and maintenance; and the ongoing sale of new cards and tokens, where appropriate.
The availability of easy-to-use Windows-based security-management software encouraged the trend towards networked access-control systems and integrated security solutions.
Key Note forecasts steady continued growth in the value of the market over the 5 years from 2002 to 2006. Technology trends, which are already well underway in the US, will follow in the UK. The main trends include more use of contactless smart cards, combining other functions, and the increasingly widespread use of biometric solutions for medium-risk, as well as high-risk, locations.
