EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Key Note estimates that the market for protective clothing and equipment was £684m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 1997, an increase of 8.6 percent on 1996. The market includes: workwear, protective clothing and uniforms; industrial footwear; respiratory protection and breathing apparatus; head, face, eye and ear protection; non-fabric medical and industrial gloves; and various other products.

Important customer sectors include the construction industry, food manufacturing, metal products manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, mining, agriculture, transport industries, health services, the police and the fire services.

In the long term, demand for protective clothing and equipment is fairly flat in volume. Price rises have been modest in recent years because of strong competition in an industry which is both highly fragmented and vulnerable to pressure from foreign suppliers. There is, however, some value growth as employers trade up to better products to meet the legal requirements.

CE became a requirement in 1995 and since then, supply on a European-wide basis has increased. UK manufacturers have been hampered in the export and home markets by the strength of the pound. Some manufacturers have achieved quite strong turnover growth in the financial year 1996/1997, but profit growth has not tended to match sales growth.

Key Note forecasts a growth of 10.2 percent in the value of the market between 1997 and 2002, to reach £754m at msp. Over the same period, there is unlikely to be much growth in volume terms.
