EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the value of the UK market
for protective clothing and equipment amounted to £620m at manufacturers'
selling prices (msp) in 1996.
This market includes: industrial workwear
and uniforms; protective clothing, such as high-visibility (hi-vis); clean-room
clothing; coldstore clothing; fire-resistant clothing; industrial gloves;
safety protective and occupational footwear; respiratory protection and
breathing apparatus; head, face, eye and ear protection; and various other
products, such as leg protectors, arm protectors and safety harnesses.
Market size is linked to the size of the employed workforce, but some
employment sectors make heavier usage of protective clothing and equipment than
others. The market is also very dependent on pressure from health and safety
legislation.
The main issues of concern to the industry since 1992 have
been the various moves to bring the European Union (EU) countries in line with
each other; via the development of common European standards. These standards
are designed to reduce trade barriers between the EU partners. As a result of
this increasing standardisation, the UK market is much more vulnerable to
penetration by European and non-European competitors than it has previously
been. However, this should also present opportunities for UK manufacturers to
increase their export activity.
Despite the impetus from stricter
legislation, the market is forecast to run flat in overall volume, showing only
slight growth in value.
