Key Note estimates that the total market for protective clothing and equipment, which includes workwear and industrial footwear, reached £780.9m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 2001.
Key Note divides the market into different sectors. These are workwear and protective clothing, industrial footwear, surgical and industrial gloves, respiratory protection and breathing apparatus, head, face, eye and ear protection and other equipment, such as fall-arrest equipment, lifejackets and limited life clothing. Most of the market falls under the heading of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as defined by EU regulations, but some workwear, worn mainly for corporate identification, is outside this scope.
The main force influencing the market is the presence of regulations which oblige employers to provide adequate protection for their workers and the possibility, that workers will sue, if they are injured at work. The UK has a reasonably good safety record, although there are some industries that have considerable room for improvement. In 2000/2001, the Health & Safety Executive estimates that deaths from workplace injuries have risen to 295 cases, compared to 220 in the previous year.
Against this pressure, the market is also affected by downturns in important employment sectors. There are many suppliers and very strong price competition for most workwear and protective products.
The industry shows a high level of product innovation to improve safety and wearability. Attention to the appearance of protective wear is fairly new, dating mainly from the mid-1990s, as the industry realises that employers have to persuade their workers to keep the garments in place, whenever necessary.
A substantial proportion of clothing manufacturing and most of the footwear manufacturing has moved out of the UK to low-cost bases. The erosion of the UK manufacturing sector is likely to progress further before it levels off. At the same time, UK suppliers are tending to complement their ranges by buying in other products to offer their customer a one-stop service.
Key Note expects a gradual growth in market value to 2002, with a trend towards better levels of protection and comfort, adding value to the market.
