The report analyses company and industry performance over the three years up to 7th November 2001. During this period, the average company involved in the new car industry witnessed a decline in both sales and profits. Sales fell from £556.6 million in 1998/99 to 542.1 million in 2000/01, a decrease of 2.6 percent.
Pre-tax profits have suffered an even worse reduction of 76.7 percent, falling from £24.8 million in 1998/99 to just £5.8 million in the 2000/01 period. The average company in the foreign vehicle distribution subsector suffered a 75.8 percent fall in pre-tax profits between the first and final years over the Report period while the average company in the UK car manufacturing sub-sector faired even worse with a decline of 135.1 percent in its pre-tax profits.
