The report itself includes many further analyses of the performance of individual companies and the industry as a whole. The report analyses company and industry performance over the three years up to 7th October 2003. During this period, the average Report company witnessed a 5.6 percent increase in sales from £83.7 million in 2000/01 to £87.9 million in 2001/02 before ending the three years in 2002/03 at £88.4 million. Pre-tax profits also increased, but by the smaller rate of 1.3 percent. In 2000/01 pre-tax profits stood at £4.36 million, increasing to £4.42 million in 2002/03. The slower increase in pre-tax profits compared with sales would suggest that the average company has witnessed rising costs of sales or increased price competition.
