Brief Description

Newly published, 'The Electrical Accessories Market Report 2002' from AMA Research offers a detailed review of this £1.5bn market, incorporating original input and research, and representing excellent value for money.
Based on product up to 1kV, the report covers in detail:
Wiring Accessories including plugs, sockets, switches, lighting fitments, others.
Circuit Protection & Distribution Boards covering consumer units, moulded case circuit breakers, miniature circuit breakers, air circuit breakers, residual current devices, distribution boards, fuseboards, fuses, fuseholders, switchboards, isolating switches, switch fuses.
Cables & Accessories, Trunking, Conduit incorporating domestic & industrial cables, cable accessories, conduit, trunking & fittings, busbars and chambers.
Overall, the market for electrical accessories has shown a marginal decline by value in 2001, following several years of modest growth. This has mainly been due to the impact of the decline in investment in the 'TMT' sector, the recession in the financial services industry, the end of the 'boom' in leisure newbuild, lack of growth in housing newbuild and the increase in low-cost imports. However, in the medium term the outlook seems more positive, assuming a stable economy, due to some stability in prices in key product areas plus an anticipated increase in demand from the burgeoning PFI market.
Of particular interest:-
Impact of low-cost commodity products from the Far East on market prices.
Consolidation in the market place through mergers and acquisitions.
Impact of collapse in TMT and financial services sectors
Growth opportunities arising from PFI investment
Written by marketing professionals with wide experience of building products and consumer durables, the report offers over 100 pages of original research and comment, providing QUANTITATIVE assessment of the markets development, along with a detailed QUALITATIVE review of the background reasons and future trends - essential requirements for good business planning.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

For this report the ' Electrical Accessories market' is defined as covering 3 broad product groups with power ratings of up to and including 1kV AC or 1kV DC: -Wiring Accessories -Circuit Protection Devices & Switchgear - Low Voltage Cabling & Accessories.

With the markets for all 3 product groups mature, recent annual growth rates by value have been modest, although by volume, increases in demand have been more significant. In recent years, key market drivers have included high levels of activity in commercial construction and home improvement and strong growth in demand for electrical and electronic equipment in both residential and non-domestic applications. However, price erosion, resulting from intense competition in the electrical contracting sector and penetration of low cost imports from the Far East, have had a limiting impact on growth rates in key sub sectors.

Those mainly affected have been low-value commodity products e.g. white-moulded wiring accessories, LV standard mains cabling and cable accessories.

Import penetration in the market for LV circuit protection and switchgear products remains much lower, due to factors such as safety legislation and product quality. In 2001 and 2002, the severe downturn in the TMT and financial services sectors has had a marked impact on demand for cabling in general, LV distribution boards and associated components. Furthermore, the PFI programme has yet to make any significant impact on demand for electrical installation equipment, although over the next few years some £25bn worth of projects are scheduled to come on-stream.

It is expected that key areas of opportunity will be the NHS, secondary education, defence establishment and 'justice' sectors. In 2002, there has been some stabilisation in prices across the product sectors under review, now that import penetration has reached a peak and UK supplied products are more competitive against imports from China and from suppliers in other East Asian countries.

This ought to contribute towards some stability in the electrical accessories market. Furthermore, it is expected that the recent trend towards market consolidation will continue, so removing excess capacity and thereby relieving some of the pressure on prices. This has already been seen in the cables sector following the departure from the market of Delta Crompton and BICC Cables in the latter 1990s. More recently, there have been several other acquisitions including those of several UK companies by Tyco Electronics plus also the aborted attempt by Schneider Electric to acquire Legrand SA.
