The UK dehumidifier market has been relatively buoyant in recent years. Although both the domestic and the industrial/commercial sector have been experiencing growth, the domestic sector has expanded more rapidly.
Future market prospects are relatively positive, with real growth rates of 6-8 percent forecast between 1997-2000. By then, the market will have an estimated value of some £69m at MSP (Manufacturers' Selling Prices), in current prices.
The domestic sector is forecast to experience annual average real growth of 7-9 percent between 1996 and the year 2000. These growth rates are above those of both the market as a whole and of the industrial/commercial sector.
Amongst the main factors which are influencing the current and future market development in the domestic sector are:-
The Industrial/Commercial market sector is forecast to grow 5-6 percent annually between 1996 and the year 2000. Some of the main factors which are influencing current and future market development in this sector are:-
The main influencing factor on purchasing behaviour in the domestic sector is price/value for money. Additional factors of importance are: product aesthetics, product quality. Consumers' increasing concerns about health matters, as well as the practical need to protect property can be positively exploited by dehumidifier manufacturers to gain sales.
Industrial users of building dryers place the greatest emphasis on price and durability. The forecast upturn in the construction industry, together with the expansion activities of tool hire companies, should stimulate increased dehumidifier sales to the hire/construction sector.
In the industrial/commercial sector, end-users give importance to price, reliability and energy efficiency. This sector offers significant scope for further development, given the range of potential application areas. Specific areas which have been identified include: paper information storage, other specialist storage, supermarkets.
The main emphasis amongst end users in the swimming pool/leisure sector is on price, durability and extraction capacity. There is currently considerable development of private health and fitness clubs, particularly within the hotel industry. Given buoyant economic conditions, such developments are likely to increase, offering sales opportunities for dehumidifier manufacturers.
The product mix in the industrial/commercial sector is estimated at Industrial/Commercial - 45 percent, Hire/Building Drying - 35 percent and Swimming Pool/Leisure - 20 percent.
The main manufacturers in the domestic sector are Ebac, Amcor, De'Longhi, Lec and others (including White Westinghouse, Matsui/Currys, HMS, Humidex). The market is therefore dominated by Ebac and further characterised by a relatively small number of companies holding significant market shares.

The remaining proportion is accounted for by a number of companies, including Aggreko, Andrew Engineering, Climate, Heatstar, J.S.Humidifiers, Menerga and Recotherm.
Ebac and Calorex are therefore the dominant manufacturers, followed by a number of other companies holding significant share.
The primary distribution channels in the domestic sector are electrical multiples/regional electricity companies, DIY Multiples, Electrical Independents/Wholesalers, Catalogue Sales and Others (including DIY/Hardware Independents, Department Stores, Air Conditioning/Heating and Ventilation Distributors).
