EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 2001, the floorcoverings market was estimated to be worth just under £2 billion at manufacturers selling prices. The market has a history of cyclical activity and tends to experience improved performances in times of economic growth and buoyant consumer spending.
The market shows a trend indicative of a market in the mature stage of its product lifecycle, experiencing relatively low levels of decline and growth when compared with other durables. Following the recessionary period of the early 1990's, the floorcoverings market grew by 17 percent in value terms between 1994-8, underpinned by buoyant levels of consumer confidence and spending. The slowing down of the overall economy in 1998 had some effect on the market, but rising confidence saw a measure of growth return to the market in the following year.
The last 4-5 years have seen a dramatic change within the floorcoverings mix, which in turn has affected the rate of value growth in the market. Although carpets continue to dominate the market, they have come under increasing pressure from the laminated wood sector which has experienced phenomenal rates of growth in the past 3-4 years.
The product mix for the floorcoverings market in 2001 saw carpet with an overall value share estimated at 70 percent of the total market. Wood and laminated wood have gained and are now estimated to represent 13 percent share, with vinyl at 10 percent, ceramic tiles at 4 percent and other floorcoverings representing the remaining 3 percent.
Carpets remained the dominant type of floorcoverings during 2001, maintaining a market share which is over five times the value of its next nearest rival, and estimated at £1.4 billion. However, carpets have continued to lose value share of the floorcoverings market since 1998, mainly due to the popularity of wood and laminated wood floorcoverings.
Tufted carpets dominate the carpet sector with an estimated 63 percent in value terms, having increased share since 1998. Woven carpets accounted for 20 percent of the carpet in 2001, having seen share decline slightly since 1998, mainly due to the decrease in the demand for patterned Axminsters and increased competition from textured tufteds. Rugs are the one sector of the woven market that has enjoyed moderate to good growth in recent years due to their complementary nature for other smooth floorcoverings. Fibre bonded carpets have maintained market share at around 10 percent, due mainly to increased demand for carpet tiles in the contract sector, however tufted carpet tiles are increasingly putting pressure upon this sector.
Some suppliers to the carpet market have experienced some turbulence since 1998, with the pressure from other floorcoverings leading to lower demand for certain carpet types. Some organisations have restructured production in order to cope with lower demand, whilst there have also been a number of businesses in the supply chain, who have been forced to close. Leading suppliers to the carpet market include A W Europe, Beaulieu, Brintons, Carpets International, Gaskell, Interface and Stoddard.
The wood floorcoverings market has experienced very high growth in recent years due mainly to the contribution of the laminated wood sector. However, demand for solid wood flooring remains relatively buoyant with the total wood floorcoverings market continuing to exhibit growth well above that of the overall floorcoverings market. Wood floorcoverings now account for an estimated 12-13 percent of the total floorcoverings market, having made considerable gains since 1998.
The most significant characteristic of this sector has been the growing number of suppliers who have either entered the market or who have increased their market presence in this sector since 1998. Leading suppliers of wood floorcoverings include Egger, Junckers, Kahrs, Kronospan, Responsive Designs, Sonae and Westco.
Vinyl floorcoverings have been affected by the trend towards wood, but have maintained value share at 10-11 percent of the floorcoverings market. The market has suffered from increasing raw materials prices and pressure on margins, and a number of suppliers have reassessed their commitment to some sectors of the vinyl floorcoverings market. There has been a measure of trading up to higher value, enhanced specification products with manufacturers introducing increasingly sophisticated designs and styles. Safety flooring has experienced demand particularly from the contract sector, with other initiatives including digital printing concepts aimed at the contract market.
Leading suppliers of vinyl floorcoverings include Altro, Amtico, Armstrong, Forbo Nairn, Marley, Polyflor and Tarkett Sommer.
Other floorcoverings include ceramic tiles and linoleum, which have both continued to show good growth. Ceramic floor tiles have benefited from the continuing popularity of domestic conservatories and were estimated to account for 4 percent of the overall floorcoverings market in 2001, with an estimated value of £77 million. Suppliers of ceramic tiles include H & R Johnson, Pilkington's Tiles and Porcelanosa. Linoleum continues to benefit from growth in both the domestic and contract market, with an estimated value of £26 million in 2001. The linoleum sector enjoys healthy positive balance in terms of international trade and leading suppliers to the UK market include Forbo-Nairn and Tarkett Sommer.
Although the independents continued to dominate the distribution of domestic floorcoverings in 2001, the sector is continuing to experience pressure from both the floorcoverings multiples and the DIY sector. The DIY channel has grown share since 1998, mainly due to their commitment to smooth floorcoverings, and in particular the laminated wood sector. The wholesale distribution of floorcoverings in the UK continues to be dominated by the Headlam Group.
